Jessica Biel is returning to her roots. The actress is officially confirming a 7th Heaven reboot. In the original series, Biel portrayed oldest daughter Mary Camden. Now, she wants to revitalize the franchise with a modern twist. This comes after social media has revisited the series, offering up laughs and commentary on it’s most cringe-worthy moments.
7th Heaven revolved around Reverend Eric Camden, his wife, and their seven children. In addition to Jessica Biel, the series starred Stephen Collins, Catherine Hicks, Barry Watson, David Gallagher, Beverley Mitchell, Mackenzie Rosman, and Nikolas and Lorenzo Brino.
Jessica Biel Confirms 7th Heaven Reboot After Cringey Online Rewatches
The family dealt with real-life issues, using their religious values and faith as the pillars for their choices, consequences, and in their everyday lives. However, when people on social media platforms such as TikTok began to rewatch the series, they noticed just how many cringy moments there were.
Storylines such as Simon using the middle finger and bringing a homeless girl back to his house in hopes of keeping her have ben explored online. Other moments such as the family’s mother admitting that she used marijuana in the past, one of Mary’s friends taking energy pills, and more have all been poked fun of as well.
“7th Heaven is a literal fever dream,” one person commented via TikTok. “How was this a real show?” asked another. “This show was UNHINGED,” a third person agreed. “It’s so ridiculous,” a fourth comment read.
The Reboot Will Be Modernized
However, if done correctly, the reboot could offer family television that tackles the issues that parents and their children are facing today. Recently, Biel spoke out about her plans for the new version of the series.
“What we want to create, how we want to modernize it, is really the things that are happening for teenagers and families that have teenagers all the way down to the youngest child — technology-based issues, school stuff, bullying stuff, drugs, alcohol,” Biel said on an episode of Collider Ladies Night.
“All of those things we want to address in a very real way, which is, I think, what the original kind of gently touched on, but we were very careful about what our audience wanted. We had a lot of limitations. We have less limitations now.”
Family Is At the Core Of The New Show
Biel went on to reveal that she wants to make a show that has family at the core, and that she can watch with her husband, Justin Timberlake, and their children.
“I’m looking for what I can watch with my kids on television. It’s limited. I cannot watch a lot of these things with them, and they love TV, and it’s my business. My husband and I are in this business together doing these things, and we can’t share a lot of that with our kids,” Biel admitted.
When news of a possible 7th Heaven reboot first broke in 2025, it was reported that the new iteration would focus on a more diverse family, and that none of the original cast members would return to reprise their roles, per Variety.
As for Biel, she’s serving as a producer on the project. However, no major casting news or plotlines have been confirmed at this time.
Where is the 7th Heaven Cast Now?
In addition to her acting career, Jessica Biel has become known for her producer skills on projects such as The Sinner and Candy. She’s married to singer Justin Timberlake and they share two children together. As for her on-screen sister, Beverley Mitchell, she hosts as 7th Heaven rewatch podcast titled “Catching Up With the Camdens.”
David Gallagher who played Simon, voices the character Riku in the Kingdom Hearts video game franchise. Mackenzie Rosman, who played little sister Ruthie continues to act and also raises her family. Meanwhile, Barry Watson also continues his acting career with roles in projects like Gossip Girl.
However, Camden parents Catherine Hicks and Stephen Collins have been out of the spotlight. Hicks decided to retire from acting. Meanwhile, Collins was dropped from his agency in 2014 when he admitted to incidents of sexual misconduct, per PEOPLE.
It’s safe to say that 7th Heaven hits a little differently when you revisit it years later. What once passed for wholesome family drama has given social media plenty of awkward storylines to dissect, laugh at and cringe over. Now, Biel wants to bring the series into the modern era. If the reboot can hold on to the original’s family-centered heart while ditching some of its dated sensibilities, it might just give viewers a reason to tune in for something other than the cringe.
