Kim Kardashian is dealing with a scary medical situation, and she’s allowing cameras to document it for her family’s reality TV series, The Kardashians. In the trailer for the newest season, Kim is seen explaining that she’s been diagnosed with esophagitis.
The clips show Kim in a hospital bed as it’s revealed that she’s having issues with her esophagus. She’s also spotted being wheeled away in a hospital bed, looking like she might be heading to some sort of procedure. Kim’s father, Robert Kardashian Sr., is also mentioned in the trailer.
Kim Kardashian Diagnosed with Esophagitis
While this may not seem like a dire situation to many, Kardashian fans know that Robert died from cancer of the esophagus in 2003 at the age of 59. Understandably, this could leave Kim feeling anxious about her own health. However, there are many different types of the condition, and Kim didn’t reveal which one she had been diagnosed with.
“Far and away the most common form is reflux esophagitis, which is a complication of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD),” Dr. Stuart Spechler, a gastroenterologist at Baylor University Medical Center and a member of the American Gastroenterological Association, told NBC News.
Could Kim’s Psoriasis Be To Blame?
Symptoms of esophagitis include a sore throat, heartburn, difficulty swallowing, and even chest pain, per The Cleveland Clinic. Causes of the condition include allergies, infections, acid reflux, medications, radiation, and autoimmune diseases. Kim has long suffered with psoriasis, an autoimmune disease that causes skin irritation and rashes.
Dr. Spechler went on to explain that there is a condition where stomach acid can damage the esophagus causing cells to form that resemble the lining of the stomach. This could eventually lead to cancer. “It is a risk factor for developing a type of esophageal cancer called esophageal adenocarcinoma,” he said.
For now, it seems that Kim Kardashian’s condition is being monitored, and will hopefully stay under control. As for the rest of the family in the trailer, things are as dramatic as ever.
